Time for some spring cleaning!

Thursday, March 20th, 2014

‘Tis the time of year for some spring cleaning. To most people, this means throwing open the windows, dusting off your favorite cleaning shoes, and getting to work. However, spring cleaning needn’t be just about purging the attic and washing the windows. There are also some important things to consider:

Speakers are the tough guys of the A/V world. They were around long before plasma and LCD TVs. Treat them right, and they’ll be around long after those dainty displays are gone. There is no need to use more than Endust or Windex - just spray it on a rag and wipe the speaker down. Avoid silicon based products such as Pledge - they can damage the finish. The grille fabric covering the speaker drivers is the speaker part you probably look at most - which is why you can’t miss seeing all the dust and pet hair it attracts. The best way to clean that is with compressed air if you don’t have compressed air on hand, you can use the upholstery brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner.”

A/V receivers, amplifiers, DVD and Blu-ray players, etc. - require the least care but are simultaneously the most susceptible to death at the hands of a enthusiastic cleaner! We recommend nothing more than an occasional wipe with a clean dry microfiber cloth - such as a microfiber cloth.

And, because the connectors on the ends of cables are often made from different metals than the jacks or binding posts they’re connected to, corrosion can occur and can actually impede the flow of electricity between cable and connector. Dedicated audiophiles should regularly clean these contacts - and some even may use different cleaning solutions such as needle doctor.

World Wide Stereo Donates Sound System To Temple Ambler’s Aquaponics Vegetable Garden

Friday, February 28th, 2014

Combining hydroponics and raising aquatic animals, Temple Ambler’s campus has created a place where land and sea grow in synchronous harmony: an organic aquaponics garden. In addition to exploring the symbiosis of plants and fish, students and staff also decided to experiment on the effect music has on cultivation.

Led by World Wide Stereo’s Jim Nahas and Ron Rumer, the project incorporated an automated sound system into the aquaponics garden area. In addition to time and labor, World Wide Stereo donated Speakercraft CRS in-ceiling speakers and Sonos connect amps to complete the installation.

Says Ron Rumer, Vice President of World Wide Stereo; “We are honored to support the University in its efforts to positively impact the environment.”

Developed by Temple University’s Horticulture staff and students, the Aquaponics garden was aims to research and improve environmental issues through self-sustainability and energy efficiencies. It will also address large-scale issues as water conservation and overfishing. With fundraising efforts in full swing, the Aquaponics project hopes to educate the public on the benefits of aquaponics and also to distribute the organic fruits, vegetables, and fresh tilapia to local farmers markets and food banks.

Jim Nahas, Project Manager adds, “Though the aquaponics garden is still developing, the initial feedback from the university is that the plants showed greater growth and better health when exposed to music versus no music at all.”

World Wide Stereo will continue to support the school in their efforts, particularly the educational kick-off event which will be held in Bright Hall Lounge, which will include a special lecture on “Aquaponics: A Complete Cycle” April 10th, at 12:30pm.
